Refreshments & Light Bites

We welcome retired Coast Guard Commander Neil Hurley for an informal talk and demonstration of some of the equipment used to light Cape Florida Lighthouse during its 200-year-long history. Producing the best light at the least cost made lighting lighthouses an important field of scientific development in the 1800’s. Neil will enlighten you (bad joke intended) with some of the historic “state of the art” equipment and principles used at Cape Florida.

Neil served in the U.S. Coast Guard for 23 years, with tours of duty on both a Coast Guard buoy tender servicing lighthouses on the Great Lakes and in the Miami, Florida District Coast Guard Office responsible for aids to navigation in the southeastern United States. His work grew into a hobby of researching the history of Florida lighthouses and numerous books, magazine articles and talks.

Neil is also the project lead who secured funding and organized efforts to replace the windows of Cape Florida Lighthouse. His enthusiasm and support for preserving our historic lighthouse is deeply appreciated. We eagerly look forward to his talk in July.
