Refreshments and Light Bites

LOCATION: The porch of the Cape Florida Lighthouse (bring your camp chair and a flashlight). Enter by the lighthouse entrance at Parking Lot

SPEAKER: Neil Hurley is a retired Coast Guard Commander who got his start servicing lighthouses and other aids to navigation on the Great Lakes and Florida. That work led to a passion for researching Florida lighthouse history, more than a dozen books on the subject and dozens of lighthouse restoration and documentation projects. Neil is also the volunteer lead coordinator of the ongoing project to replace the windows at the top of Cape Florida lighthouse.

TOPIC: Neil will share a variety of stories about the lighthouse pulled years of research using historic newspapers, books and government reports.  He will cover questions such as: Did you know that two of the "Spanish Indians" who attacked the lighthouse in 1836 were known by the keeper as Joe and Bob? That efforts to build the original lighthouse were plagued by shipwreck and disease? Do you know about how many men were needed to rebuild the lighthouse after it was attacked?  What did the top of the lighthouse originally look like?  Where is Aaron Carter buried? How did the legend of Henry begin?  What did life like at Cape Florida in the early days of the lighthouse?

RSVP: Events@FriendsCapeFlorida.org

Bring your folding chair! (We have some, but bring your own if you can).

Enjoy free refreshments and light bites!
